personality
Cheerful and Carefree
Melissa, or Mew, as she likes to be called, is a very cheerful soul, which is no doubt the first thing anyone will notice about her, right after her age. She's younger than most, which is part of the reason why she's so happy and doesn't care what other people think. The other part is that she is a genuinely happy person, and loves to enjoy anything that life has to offer. She takes simple pleasure in almost anything, from windmills to bubbles to a cool breeze on a hot day. It's hard to find her downcast or overly worried about something, because she has faith that it will all be fine, and she doesn't like to worry, and so she just doesn't let herself worry. She leaves that to other people, since they already seem so good at it. She likes to be happy, and likes it when other people are happy too, and so will always do her best to try and cheer people up and give them a reason to be happy again. She will always try to befriend anyone she can, just because everything is more fun with friends!
This carefree attitude can be a problem, since it does mean that she worries about very little about things that are important (such as when to arrive places, or what class she's going to next) and can be seen as quite naive. Mew is actually very intelligent, but no one would ever suspect the girl nicknamed "Mew" unless they saw her in a class where she was actually trying to do her work. And so, Mew comes off as naive and silly (the latter of which she is, most of the time). She also loves to play and make believe, and so this can add to her childish appearance. She can be mature, but is rarely seen in that state, since playing and being young is a lot more fun.
Highly Intelligent and Moral
The whole reason that Melissa is a twelve-year old attending high school is due to her intelligence. She is very smart, able to solve problems very quickly and is quite observant of the world around her. Her father, who raised her for the most part, was quite surprised when she got her IQ tested and found that at an IQ of 140, she was well above normal intelligence. Compounding this somewhat, Mew also has ADHD, which is another reason why she is so observant - she notices everything, and usually has some comment or another. She would probably be further ahead in school if she didn't have ADHD, but she is only a year ahead of her fellow students. She's a quick thinker and a hard worker when she can put her mind to it, and usually has very insightful and thought-provoking things to say. She also loves to learn, and absorbs all kinds of knowledge whenever she can. She is constantly fascinated with things, especially those things that she doesn't know much about - she always seeks to learn more.
But because of her high thinking capacity, Melissa also views the world quite differently than most people do, and so feels she has a strong sense of moral justice. She will never let anyone take the blame for something they didn't do, and will always step into situations in which someone needs reasoning to help them. She usually gets herself into quite a few sticky situations that way, but fortunately she can get out of them, or try to fight back (although she is small and doesn't usually have the advantage). When someone does something that Melissa feels is wrong, she feels obligated to step in and stop them from whatever they're doing. She feels that people need to be valued no matter who they are or what they've done, and so she tries to stick up for everyone, especially the underdogs.
Flexible and Accommodating
Mew likes to try a little bit of everything. This comes to her studies, what activities she tries (anything from mini-golf to skydiving), and where she goes in life. She feels that life is a never ending path, but you never know which turn to take, and so she tries each one to see what happens. She'll never give anything a bad opinion until she tries it (and even then she would be reluctant to give anything a bad name - she tries to give everything at least a slightly positive spin). It is rare that Mew will ever complain about anything that she is unfamiliar with, since she will be sure to try it and give it a serious and fair hearing before she would deem it even the slightest bit unpleasant. ("There must be something good about it!")
Melissa is also very welcoming of new people and is not at all judgmental. This can put her in a problematic situation (since she doesn't think anyone should ever be deemed untrustworthy), but overall she loves to just make friends and that means that anyone and everyone is a friend of Mew's. She will change whatever she can to make people feel more comfortable, including room situations, providing entertainment (toys, video games, pretty much whatever she can get her hands on), or anything that is legal. She doesn't usually go outside of the bounds of legality, but she could be persuaded if someone was really unhappy with their situation (lack of beer, drugs, etc), because she hates to see people unhappy for any reason. She doesn't like it when people want to leave (or stop being her friend), and can seem clingy as she offers them things to stay - good food, fun toys, anything she would think they might like. Some of her relationships with people can be very shallow, but she secretly hopes that she will make a friend close enough to be her best friend. In the meantime, though, there is nothing wrong with just having friends, and so Mew will do whatever she can to have them stay as her friends and to keep them happy.

appearance
Melissa is only thirteen, and so she hasn't grown too much. She's about 5'1", and weighs 120 lbs. She has big and bright blue eyes that are usually twinkling with merriment or with mischievousness, if she's in the mood. She has blonde hair that extends a little past her shoulders. She usually likes to wear her hair in pigtails, since she thinks it looks cute and it keeps it out of the way - it's a win-win situation to her (and pigtails can be decorated with ribbons and other fun things!). She has a fair complexion, with a few freckles, and a somewhat athletic body structure, since she does spend a lot of time running around, climbing trees, and just playing overall. She isn't overly in shape, but she isn't fat either, not that she really cares about her appearance in that way. She thinks everyone should accept everyone, and so appearances don't matter to her.
Mew likes to wear bright colored shirts and shorts, and occasionally jeans. Her wardrobe varies, but generally you can count on her to have on something bright or funny (in a nice way, not sarcastic or mean), and to wear tall, multi-colored socks. She loves to have different kinds of socks, since those are a fun conversation piece and are fun to look at, too. She'll sometimes accessorize with ribbons or other fun things she can put in her hair, and she likes to wear bright or sparkly jewelry, like necklaces and bracelets. She also likes to wear fun hats, but only when it's cold, since they usually get in the way of her hair.
Sometimes Mew will also have funny things like a pirate's hat or a tail so that way she can pretend, but she doesn't wear these to class, since she actually does want not to be distracted (though that plan usually fails). She doesn't mind people noticing her, but will rarely notice them unless it's someone that she already knows.

history
hometown - New York, New York
Jacob and Melissa Matthews were young newlyweds living happily in New York, New York. They were constantly volunteering with the church, loved to help people, and were just kind and friendly overall. When Melissa announced that she was pregnant, the two couldn't be more overjoyed - they couldn't wait to be parents and raise their child together. They were told that Melissa needed to be very careful, since it was unsure if she could successfully birth due to her family heritage - the females in her family were known to have difficulty bearing children. And so Jacob and Melissa were very careful throughout the whole pregnancy, doing their best to make sure Melissa and the baby would be safe and healthy.
However, Melissa went into labor prematurely, a week before the baby was expected. It was a long and arduous delivery that ended in the birth of Melissa Marina Matthews on September 26, 1997. Her mother had to stay in the hospital overnight for observation. In the end, the stress and blood loss, along with complications that had occurred during the delivery was too much for Melissa, and she died the next day. Jacob was heartbroken that he would have to raise baby Melissa without her mother, but he knew that that would be what she wanted - a happy young daughter. Jacob vowed to give baby Melissa everything that she needed, and to care for her and love her just as much as if she had two parents.
And so, Melissa grew up in a happy home, even if her father did take awhile to get over his grieving. But Melissa helped him with that - she was a constantly happy baby, and rarely fussed over much of anything. She loved to play and explore and learn, and was very smart. Her father, just for curiosity's sake, took her in for IQ testing, and found that her IQ was at 140 - "superior intelligence," they called it. She was quickly enrolled into the finest schools her father could pay for. She learned a lot there, but was often looked at strangely for her peppiness and usual lack of attention. She always seemed to be paying attention, though, because she would answer all the questions right and understood the material, but if you were watching her you would think she had gone off to dreamland. She was constantly fidgeting, playing, giggling about something, joking, and other things that didn't look like studying or paying attention. Another test when Melissa was in the second grade revealed that she had ADHD. (Apparently that had explained a lot.)
Melissa loved school. She had friends, she was learning, and then there was recess! She could play, and jump around, and just be overall silly and fun. She had a funny habit of saying the word "mew" at the end of sentences and when she wanted to ask a question. She attributed this to her love of cats, but her friends started calling her "Mew" after awhile, since most people don't really say funny words like that without a reason, and the nickname stuck - even her father started calling her 'his little Mew.' Melissa was just in love with life - she had a great daddy, a good school, friends, and even a fun nickname! She could have lived like that forever.
It wasn't until fifth grade, when Melissa was eight, that change came about again. This change came in the form of a step-mother and a step-brother, Micah. Melissa was perfectly fine with this change at first - she liked her new step-mother, who was friendly and full of laughter. The two women would often play together, and Melissa determined that she liked her. She could also see that the woman cared for her father, and so she earned the "Mew seal of approval" very quickly. That part wasn't bad. The part that was hard was her step-brother Micah. Melissa tried very hard to be friends with him, but as soon as Micah figured out how intelligent she was, he became openly jealous and hostile to his new younger sibling. He would never touch her... in the house. He tried to hurt her for whatever reason when they weren't under parental supervision, telling her to "get out of his way," but Melissa became smart about that and was quick to get away from him when they were alone. It made her sad at first, because she wanted to be friends with her brother - she'd always wanted a sibling. It was during this period of elementary and middle school that Melissa developed an interest in genetics, discovering what made people how they were. Not only was the study fascinating to her - one gene controlled everything, how cool was that! - but she also had this idea that maybe she could figure out why she and Micah were so similar, and yet so different.
One night, Melissa overheard her parents talking about Micah, and how he had even a greater intelligence than her - he had an IQ of 145, which was considered in the genius level. Melissa didn't listen to the rest of the conversation (eavesdropping was bad, you know), and thought she had a new way to talk to Micah - they were both smart, so they could do schoolwork and learn together! And maybe if they got along then, they could be friends and start acting like brother and sister, the way she wanted. She put her plan into action, but it was unsuccessful, since Micah started wanting to prove that he was better than her, and that she needed to stop making him look like a fool. Melissa tried to tell him that it didn't matter which of them "won" in school - they were supposed to be learning and just having fun - but Micah made everything into a competition, for their parents' attention and affections, for the better grade, for everything.
This went on for years, and was worsened by the fact that Melissa tested out of sixth grade, and then was only one year below Micah, who became furious at the idea that she could probably match him in intelligence. Nevertheless, despite his jealousy and hostility, Melissa tried to be Micah's friend and sister. She was just sure she could get through to him.
Their parents had noticed the conflict, and decided it was probably best if they sent one of them away for high school. Melissa offered to leave first, and told Micah that he could always come with her. He had shown one sign that he might not hate her entirely: he had wished her well at her new school. He hadn't said anything else and denied it when she thanked him later, but it was a start.
She promised Micah that she would write letters and e-mails to him, and left for Summer Orientation at Pallet High School, and would attend Pallet High School for freshman year. She still remained hopeful that Micah would follow her - they would be friends, someday. She was sure of it.

connect the dots
- I chose the name Melissa Marina Matthews because not only did they all start with "M" for Mew, but Matthews also has the "ew" sound, like at the end of Mew's name. (Marina also sounds like 'marine' and Mew was in a bubble underwater for a long time.)
- She's majoring in Genetics because Mewtwo was created from her DNA, and so I created in Melissa an interest in Genetics. Mew also liked to follow the scientists and Team Rocket around, as they were discovering things. Finally, Bulbapedia and Pokedex entries indicate that Mew holds the DNA of all [most likely Kanto] Pokemon.
- All of Mew's personality comes from the account on Bulbapedia about its appearances in Pokemon: The First Movie and in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. In these movies, Mew is a happy, playful individual. She is rarely worried about anything (such as when Mewtwo is throwing psychic energy at her), and loves to make and keep friends (such as when it had Pikachu and Meowth to play with in the Tree of Life and didn't want Pikachu to leave to find Ash). She is also moral because of her sense of justice in the first movie, when she was stopping Mewtwo from destroying the original Pokemon, saying that he was wrong because "it's what is in a Pokemon's heart that matters." Mew's intelligence comes from the fact that Mew is shown to be powerful, and is a Psychic type Pokemon and a legendary, so she needs to be smart and stuff. :]
- "Mew is a very curious and intelligent Pokémon that will only appear to someone with a pure heart. It loves playing around and swimming, and is known to act very childish at times, wanting everybody it trusts to play with it (Bulbapedia)." That should explain a lot of my personality. :]
- Mew is known to fly and swim underwater, and so Melissa likes to swim and loves heights, climbing, and flying.
- Mew struck me as a very smiley and peppy person, and pink is most closely related to blonde, which is why I chose Chloe Moretz as her portrayer (she also looks young enough to play a 13 year old). That's why she also wears bright and happy colors and her hair in pigtails - it seems very childish (in a positive context) and peppy.
- Melissa's jealous and violent step-brother is of course, none other than the infamous Mewtwo. But he's not all bad in the end. ^^ (I also feel like he would improve after she left and realized that she was just trying to be his friend and help him live his life, but he made it a competition, sort of like the movie.)
