Diplomatic
Bartholomew, as he likes to be known, is a very peaceful sort. He’ll do his best to solve the problems of others in as compromising and settling a way as possible. He hates to have anyone, especially his friends, go to conflict for any number of reasons. He feels that conflict is pointless when people should simply learn to work together, or find a something that they feel similarly on and avoid the topic of conflict altogether. He is not one to go picking fights, and should he find his way into one, he would try reason his way out of the problem rather than go to violence or shouting. He feels that taking an aggressive approach to problems is unnecessary if the other party would only understand his feelings and how they coordinate with theirs (rather than against them). It would take a lot to anger him, since he is quite tolerant. This is different from annoying or exasperating him, which is a fairly simple task - all one has to do is make an absurd remark. Even if it’s all in good fun, he feels the need to explain things logically, and so illogical or plain silly ideas can rub him the wrong way, which can provide entertainment for some who enjoy being ridiculous.
Stubborn
Bart will not give up on any endeavor he sets his sights on. He is quite tenacious, and with his reasoning abilities, he will try his best to convince others that he is right. He won’t give up on his values or his ideals, which can make him seem naive, but in reality he just chases after whatever he deems worthy to chase. It’s hard to call Bart out for the count if he’s trying something, whether it’s schoolwork or growing a plant in the garden or even trying to make a friend. Once he thinks something of something or someone, it’s nearly impossible to change his mind, since he will hold onto his reasoning until he will feel that he has no choice but to accept the opposite, which he will only do quite grudgingly. This can get him into a certain kind of trouble (and give him a sense of naviete, though he’d never say that himself), since he won’t always accept good reasoning if it doesn’t match his own, and if someone is a ‘bad’ person, he may not accept that if they are nice to him and he thinks they are a good person.
Friendly
Bartholomew might come of as a serious and studious individual (and he is), but he is very willing to start up a conversation with someone who looks like they need someone to talk to, or help out someone who looks like they need a hand. He likes to be helpful and social, which makes him a good candidate to mentor younger students. He acts like a big brother, taking good care of all of those who need help or are younger than he is. He will mingle in groups, although he wouldn’t say no to just being with a few close friends. He’s good at making friends, even if his first choice is to be by himself so he can do what he would like or need to do, such as garden or study. He can turn frosty quickly, however, in response to rudeness or being calling “Bart” or “Barty.” He doesn’t like his nicknames, and feels like people are lazy if they can’t say Bartholomew. In general, thought, Bartholomew tries his best to get along with anyone, and if they put forth the effort to be friendly, he will match it easily.
Open-minded
Bartholomew is willing to give anything at least one try before he decides what he thinks of it. He’s not picky when it comes to food, places where he has to go, or people that he has to be around, and will tolerate many things. He doesn’t judge people for their beliefs, appearance, or even initial actions. Unless what they do is negative toward him and his friends in a way that can’t be repaired with his diplomatic tactics and that he has personally witnessed (he doesn’t take stock in rumors or petty gossip), then he’ll give a friendship, or at least an amiable acquaintance-ship with them his best shot. He’s willing to be friends with anyone, and he will often give people second chances. Even if they annoy him (which can happen frequently due to his logical way of thinking that makes him exasperated trying to explain something to someone having an illogical sense of humor), he’ll assume that it’s all in good fun and leave it at that. He would be hesitant to try something if it challenged his beliefs, but he would try it and would simply go in wary to prevent himself from changing.
Responsible
All of his life, Bartholomew has always done his best to be the responsible child, the one his parents never had to worry about. He rarely procrastinates on his schoolwork, makes sure that everything is in order so that way he doesn’t have to rush in the mornings, does his chores before he’s asked, doesn’t go where he shouldn’t, and overall just tries to make sure that he’s done what he needs to do. He’s very good with children, and likes to be with those younger than him since he believes he’s a good caretaker and can have fun with younger people. He would have made a perfect older brother had he not been the youngest of three. People in his hometown even used to hire him as a babysitter, because they knew that he would make sure everything was taken care of and their children would be safe. He was “good old responsible Bart.” However, as much as Bartholomew tries to lead his friends in the right way, they can lead him astray if they pressure him in the correct way. He tries his best not to be lead astray, however. He can seem like a stick in the mud by saying no to going places he’s not supposed to, and that bothers him since his old friends used to laugh and make fun of him for it, but he won’t leave his family or his studies worried or incomplete (respectively), since he’s put too much into them, and he would hate to worry his parents that way. He also realizes that it’s not worth impressing a friend just to get in trouble, even if he is sorely tempted to try and rebel occasionally. (These plans usually never pan out.)
Loyal
Once you’re a friend of his, Bartholomew will not leave you or lose faith in you. This can be his downfall, since it means he can be swayed to do things he knows he shouldn’t, but he hates the idea of being a bad friend, and so he’ll support his friends until the end. This means that even if you make mistakes, he’ll still try to help you and possibly fix your mistakes if he can. On the plus side, however, it does mean that you’ve always got a friend in Bartholomew once you become his friend, and he is very reliable. It would be hard for him to altogether quit a friendship, and he would still maintain contact however he could. He’ll always stick up for his friends even when they’re not there, and wholly disapproves of gossiping and talking about people behind their back, and so you can always rely on Bartholomew to help you out with any scenario, even if you’re not personally there.

appearance
Bartholomew is a homely individual, with a friendly face and a serious disposition. He isn’t the tallest at 5’6”, but he’s certainly not the shortest, and he’s still growing. He weighs about 130 pounds, and he’s not the most muscular, since he spends his time outdoors in the garden, or else he’s studying -- not much time for working out, not that he cares too much. He has kindly brown eyes and noticeable, elf-like ears. He has somewhat shaggy dark brown hair that’s generally straight but can have a slight wave in it at times. He will occasionally get it trimmed otherwise it gets in his way, but other than the occasional combing, he’ll let it do what it wants to do.
Bartholomew doesn’t care much about appearances, and generally wears whatever is comfortable and remotely clean. If he has a choice, he prefers to wear greens and blues, but if that’s not available, he won’t start crying over it - he’ll just move on to the cleanest shirt that he has. His hair is generally all over the place when he decides not to comb it (which is a fairly frequent occurance), but he’ll do enough to keep it out of his eyes so it doesn’t distract him. He’s usually seen wearing clothes that would work well outside in the garden or on a hike - a T-shirt and cargo shorts, or jeans and a hoodie if it’s cold. Overall, Bart gives little thought to his appearance, believing that people should offer more than appearances if they actually want to get anywhere in life.

history
hometown - Campbellsburg, Indiana
Bartholomew Sauer was born on April 14, 1996 to Nickolas and Sarah Sauer as their third and final son, which was a relief to some, since their children had each been born almost immediately after each other. He was born in Campbellsburg, Indiana on a large commercial corn farm, of which his father was the manager. His father’s real passion, along with his mother’s, however, was gardening for fun, growing his own fruits and vegetables as well as other plants just to see if he could. He tried to impose this upon his children, with moderate success, especially since when they were younger. Bartholomew’s mother was a calm and perky housewife, who enjoyed being domestic and gardening in her spare time when she wasn’t volunteering in the small community that they lived in. Bartholomew’s two older brothers, Iverson and Vincent (one and two years older respectively), were as good to him as older brothers could be, excluding the usual rough-housing common of boys. All three of them seemed to get along just fine, although Iverson and Vincent were more prone to fighting than Bartholomew was with either of them. As Bartholomew grew older, he grew more and more skilled at pacifying his brothers and fights rarely lasted for longer than a day or two. Bartholomew’s home life was relatively peaceful in that respect.
When Bartholomew was ready to star attending school, he was quickly recognized as one of the top students in his class. He was a smart kid - some were surprised, since they didn’t expect a farmer’s child to be so smart, but his mother was well-educated and had aspired to be a teacher until she had started having children, deciding to stay in her provided-for domestic role. She had taught Bartholomew and his brothers many of the basic skills they would need for school, and Bartholomew was naturally smart and good at problem solving. Some of the suburban children made fun of Bartholomew and his brothers for their origins, getting the idea from their older siblings and parents who could be scornful of the farm kids. Bartholomew ignored the comments, and Vincent hadn’t seemed to notice, but Iverson took the remarks to heart, and got in trouble for causing trouble many times. Bartholomew and Vincent ended up having to restrain him many times, and Bartholomew would have to use his diplomatic ideals to try and calm his brother, telling him they weren’t worth it. He didn’t understand that Iverson had put up with it for longer, and he thought that his eldest brother was just letting them walk all over him - Iverson had thought someone needed to do something about the taunts and jeers from the ignorant and “immature” kids. Bartholomew was often the peacekeeper, and had work hard to convince his middle brother that they weren’t worth the trouble.
When he wasn’t in school, Bartholomew liked to spend much of his time away from others and more time with plants in the garden and greenhouses that his father cultivated lovingly. He and his mother spent much of their time there, unlike his two brothers, who were more social than Bartholomew was and spent more time with their friends rather than in a stuffy greenhouse. They appreciated the plants and would help out when they didn’t have other plans with a good attitude, but not to the degree of their little brother. Bartholomew loved watching them grow strong and healthy under a kind hand, and soon learned as much about the various plants as his father knew, and he and his parents would often spend time reading over plant guides in their spare time. It was looked at as a strange hobby, but most of the people that thought it was odd were more willing to say “to each his own” rather than cause a big deal about it. Besides, they lived in a farm community - who was going to argue with a love of plants and how they grew?
When Bartholomew reached middle school, however, he became close friends with a boy named Ashton, an adventurous young boy who showed Bartholomew that he could have fun without plants or school. He was also the first person to call him Bart and Barty, which Bartholomew didn’t like, but since Ashton was his friend, he decided to (grudgingly) put up with it. In all other ways, Ashton was a good friend to him. He spent a lot of time helping him with his schoolwork, since Ashton was not the most studious of students, but Ashton often dragged him away from the homework and the greenhouses in order to go exploring the woods and other farms in Campbellsburg. It was an unusual experience for Bartholomew, to see more of the world than what was familiar to him, but he realized that it wasn’t bad, even fun at times when they found something fun or made a new friend at another farm. He soon realized however, that these small-time exploits were not enough for Ashton.
By the beginning of high school, Ashton was tired of school, of the small town of Campbellsburg, of the state of Indiana as a whole. He and Bartholomew both attended a local high school near the city of Salem, Indiana, where Bartholomew was bored of the “less than stellar academic quality” offered there (as he liked to say), and Ashton was just bored period. It was near the end of the first semester of their freshman year when Ashton suggested that they both run off, take all the money they could get, and travel the world. Bartholomew tried to reason with his friend to dissuade his dreams of grandeur - they were only fourteen, after all, so who was going to take them seriously? Where would they get money? Where would they go? They had never been farther than Salem, so how could they expect to go out into the world? Instead of listening to reason, as Bartholomew had hoped, Ashton instead started a huge fight, calling Bartholomew a fake friend for trying to crush his dreams and for not coming with him on this grand adventure of his. Bartholomew, hurt by his friend’s insults and the thought that his friend thought he was fake, tried to show his friend how reckless and unreasonable he was being. In the end, however, Ashton left Campbellsburg one night, taking all of his saved college money and everything he owned that was important to him, and he was never heard from again.
Bartholomew tried to find him once Winter Break started, but Ashton had done his best not to leave any traces, and Bartholomew could never apologize to his friend for trying to tell him off and for being a “fake” friend. He hated the idea that that would be how Ashton would think of him, if he ever thought of him again. After that disastrous encounter, he resolved to be a loyal friend, so no one would ever see him as a fake person ever again. And even after his parents, Ashton’s parents, and local authorities told him that it wasn’t really his fault other than not telling an adult that Ashton was thinking of running away, he felt that it was his fault that Ashton had wanted to run away. He wasn’t sure of a definitive reason why it was his fault, but he felt like he could have done more to make Ashton’s life better so he wouldn’t have had to leave Campbellsburg. He knew that would never give up his values and morals, but if a friend asked him to do something, he would do the thing they asked to the best of his ability. It was his way of trying to make it up to Ashton.
After Ashton left, there was really no reason for Bartholomew to stay in his “less than excellent” school. His parents both recognized that he needed academic stimulation, and would thrive on it - the only reason they had put him in the local school was because they didn’t want to send him away, and he had friends, but with Ashton gone, they knew it would be easier for Bartholomew to move on away from home, and with the distraction of his studies to keep him occupied. They chose a boarding school in Pallet, Colorado that was known for its wide variety of choices in “majors” of study, and for its excellent academic reputation overall -- Pallet High School. Bartholomew, ready to put Ashton behind him, made no objection, and left for Summer Orientation at Pallet High. He wasn’t sure where he was going or what to expect, but it was better than being surrounded by old memories.
Bartholomew Sauer arrived at Pallet High School ready to turn a new and different leaf.

connect the dots
- Name - I chose the name Bartholomew because not only does it mean “son of a farmer,” which matches his grass-type nature and his chosen major, but also because Bartholomew Sauer sounds phonetically like “Bulbasaur”. The extra “b” as his middle name (“Bartholomew B. Sauer”) only adds to the phonetic similarity. (And I just liked the name Blake, which happens to mean “dark-haired,” which kind of matches his portrayer. ^^)
- I made Bartholomew major in Horticulture, because that is the cultivation and growing of seeds, and studying how and what makes them grow the best, and I felt that this related to Bulbasaur because he was a plant, and his friendly nature fits this major.
- I chose Liam Aiken for Bulbasaur because he has a friendly, but serious face, and his elf-ish ears actually remind me of the “ears” that Bulbasaur has. He also honestly just struck me as someone who looked like Bulbasaur.
- In the TV show (according to Bulbapedia and my own experiences watching it), Bulbasaur was known for being friendly to pretty much all of the the Pokemon they encountered, and at Professor Oak’s lab he calmed all of the Pokemon with his diplomatic ways. Even though he had to use force to calm them originally, I don’t see Bulbasaur as an aggressive type - he was more willing to use a way of peace (which, in Pokemon, battling is a way to settle differences without “fighting,” per say) than go about fighting everything he came across to get it to submit. This is why Bartholomew is both friendly and diplomatic (and stubborn - because he won’t give up on anything he tries).
- From the same part of the TV show, I also get the feeling the Bulbasaur was open-minded. Professor Oak had given up on the Pokemon near his lab that were constantly fighting, and no human could help. But Bulbasaur didn’t seem to care where the Pokemon came from, or how they were acting and how they had acted - he only tried to help them, which struck me as how he was very accepting. He was also friends with Ash’s Squirtle, who was quite the opposite of him in personality. This gives me the impression that Bartholomew, then, should be open-minded as well.
- Also in the TV show (slash Bulbapedia), Ash’s Bulbasaur was abandoned, but would not leave the place it had been left, in the hope that it’s original trainer would return. Another Bulbasaur (a different one) was also left, but it waited for its trainer to return, and when he was reunited with him, he still wanted to be his Pokemon, even when his original trainer refused to take him back for selfish reasons. These Bulbasaurs gave me the inspiration for Bartholomew’s loyalty.
- Bartholomew lives on a commercial corn farm in Indiana because of Bulbasaur’s plant roots (no pun intended). He is fascinated with all types of plants, including those that are more harmful simply because of their effects, which relates to his part Poison-type nature, although he is mostly Grass-type, in that respect.
- He has two older brothers, Iverson and Vincent, who are based off of Ivysaur and Venasaur respectively. (Ivysaur/Iverson is the more aggressive one because of my personal opinion that Ivysaur looks more aggressive than Bulbasaur, at least. Venasaur just looks chill.)
- The character Ashton was based off of Ash and, now that I’ve done some reading, Ash’s Squirtle. Both are adventurous, loud-mouthed, and not exactly studious or serious. Although in the TV show they parted ways peaceably, I imagined that Ashton would feel that Bartholomew had abandoned him by not going with him on his dream to travel the world
and become a Pokemon masterrather than just staying at home and making their own peaceful lives.

The taxi pulled smoothly up to the front gates of Pallet High School. The stone sign that stood out front proudly declared, “Pallet High School: Where we strive to be the very best, like no one ever was.” Bartholomew, looking out of the taxi’s window, couldn’t help but think how strange and vaguely arrogant the school motto was, but who was he to comment on something that had been chosen years ago? He turned his attention to the wind turbines and the solar panels on the roofs of each building at the top of the hill behind the gate. He had read on the plane ride that the school was almost entirely run by wind and solar power, which he thought was impressive, he supposed, but he had been more interested in reading about their science center, which had greenhouses and a terrace full of plants. When the taxi came to a stop, Bartholomew quickly got out to help the cab driver get his trunk out from the back of the cab - the trunk, even. He smiled briefly at the irony, and then turned his smile to the cab driver. He hoped he would forgive him for the weight - his mother had made up for the fact that she hadn’t been able to come with him by packing his trunk almost to the brim of “everything he might need.” It was silly, but he supposed it was very maternal, which was a good thing for him - just not for his back or his arms.
Once he had hefted the trunk out (ignoring the cabbie’s continued cursing), he thanked the man and handed him a twenty dollar bill. It wasn’t long before he was waving good-bye to a cloud of dust coming up from the path leading up to the school. Bartholomew turned and looked up at the school that would be his home for the next six months. He would be staying for Summer Orientation, and then for the school year. He might go home for winter break, but he wasn’t sure just yet, and that was so far away anyway. He had other goals to focus on first, like getting into his studies and getting familiar with the campus. Maybe making some friends, too, if he had time for that. But he was reluctant to try that just yet. Besides, he was here for the Orientation and the academics, not for the social aspect. That just wasn’t as important.
What was important was how he was going to get his heavy trunk up the hill to the office where he could get checked in. Bartholomew looked up and sighed at the hill, but dutifully started trudging toward the front gates. He reached up to open it, but it started opening by itself. Automatic system? He wondered, but gratefully took his trunk through the gate. It closed behind him as he paused and stared up at the long flight of steps leading up to the main building (he thought it was the main building anyway - it looked like the one on the cover of the pamphlet). With another dutiful sigh, Bartholomew started dragging his trunk up the stairs.
It wasn’t exactly how he had pictured his grand entrance on his new life, but it would have to do.
“Hey, need a hand?”
Bartholomew looked up, surprised to see another boy - another student, perhaps? - bounding down the steps toward him. Where had he come from?
No matter where he had come from, Bartholomew wasn’t going to complain and nodded gratefully. “That would be great, thanks.” The other boy lifted the opposite end of the trunk, and they started ascending the stairs together.
“Whew, what did you pack in this thing, bricks?” The other boy panted as they hefted the trunk toward the administration building.
“Not that I’m aware of. My mom had a lot of things to put in there.” Bartholomew panted back. This boy didn’t really seem to understand that they should save their breath for the climb, but it was going faster than he had expected, and they were close to the top now. Once they reached the administration building, they placed the suitcase down and Bartholomew gazed out at the view. The other buildings were picturesque against the mountains in the background, wind turbines spun lazily, and the solar panels glinted as they reflected the sun in the cloudless sky overhead. It was certainly a beautiful place, if nothing else.
“Not a bad view, huh?” The boy who had helped him walked up next to Bartholomew, who nodded, not wanting to speak for fear that it might ruin the moment. They stood quietly for a short moment, looking out at the buildings around them, and then the boy nodded somewhat awkwardly.
“Well, I’ll be off, then. See you around, I guess.” He raced off again before Bartholomew could even say thank you. He wondered if all of the students here were as strange as that one.
Well, at least he was friendly enough. Bartholomew shrugged and walked into the administration building. He would have time to chat later.
He sort of wished that he knew what he was walking into, at least.
