It was about 4:30 when Flora entered the library. As she walked in, she noticed a few of familiar and semi-familiar faces, as one tended to do at a place the size of Pallet.Though there was what she considered a pleasant low hum of activity as some people studied and some of those around her merely chatted with their friends, the room was not too crowded, and so she managed to snag a table to herself. Setting down her heavy Botany textbook and her bookbag, she began to unpack her things for a concentrated homework session.
Opening up her agenda-- a little book decorated with an effusive flower motif in shades of pink, yellow, and orange-- she read over her assignments to remind herself: she had an essay due next week, 30 pages to read for English, math homework (ew), and she had to read and answer questions from her Botany textbook.
At this, Flora frowned down at her own neat handwriting. Which questions? Which pages? She had failed to write this information down. How could she have forgotten something like that? It wasn't like her. She felt a nasty tang of disappointment with herself.
At least she knew how to fix this. She had noticed the boy at the table next to her, who was very studiously bent over his homework. At this angle all she could see of him was dark hair that reminded her of the sepals of a flower, but she recognized him as a classmate who went by the name of Bartholomew Sauer. Picking up her textbook, she went over to him.
"Sorry," she said, coming up to him, "but can you remind me exactly what our assignment was for Botany? Were we supposed to do the review on page 130 or what...? I sort of can't remember."

Bartholomew worked studiously over his geometry homework. He didn't like it, but it had to be done, and the way he saw it, it was easier if he got it done first so that way he could work on his other, more enjoyable homework later. (Yes, he did think some of his homework was enjoyable. Someone had to like school, after all.) His head was bent down close to his books and his paper, writing out a geometry proof, his least favorite thing that they had done in geometry so far. His table had his work in a semi-circle around him. His agenda - dark green with a tree growing on the front - was open to the homework he had due. His textbooks were stacked next to that, and his geometry book was open in front of him to the pages he had to complete. He bit his lip as he encountered a snag in his proof. What if he had to prove they were complimentary angles and --
"Sorry, but can you remind me what exactly our assignment was for Botany? Were we supposed to do the review on page 130 or what...? I sort of can't remember."
Bartholomew looked up, startled, and saw a girl that was in his botony class. Her name was -- he searched for a moment, and then it hit him -- Flora. That was what it was. He had never really spoken to her, but she seemed friendly enough. He sat up and consulted his agenda.
“Says here we're supposed to do page 150 and 151, and answer all the questions on both pages. I think she said there was going to be a quiz next time, too.” Bartholomew looked up at her to see that she got it, and then an idea came into his mind, and before he knew it, he was asking her.
“Hey, do you want to study together? Might be easier if we had a partner to study with.” He offered, not sure why he had asked, but he was kind of bored by himself in his corner. Surely it wouldn’t be so bad if she joined him, just to study with him.
Summary: [/i] Bartholomew is working, then is interrupted by Flora. He gives her the homework, and then asks if she wants to study with him, just as a random gesture. He’s not sure why he does it, but he doesn’t refute his idea. Comments:[/i] Study buddies! :] [/blockquote]

"One fifty," she repeated to herself, too quietly for Bart to hear. Not one thirty. Then to Bart she said "Thank you," with a grateful smile that was only slightly marred by the embarrassment on her face.
Then he was asking her if she wanted to study with him. "Sure," she said instantly. Flora was a firm believer in the power of group study sessions. "Just a sec."
Setting down her textbook on the empty side of the table where her peer sat, she nipped back and brought over her paper, pencils, and bag. Now completely prepared to study, she then pulled up a chair next to Bartholomew.
"I'm pretty sure I understand the gist of it," Flora remarked, beginning to read over the questions. "It's not that complicated. It's just all the fidgety little details that are too much to remember."
Comments: What are they studying, anyways? I'm inclined to make it photosynthesis because we just learned that in Bio II.

Flora seemed to appreciate his help, which made Bartholomew smile a bit, glad that he had been able to help. She thanked him, and he nodded briefly.
"Sure," he acknowledged her thanks with the simple smile and nod gesture. When she agreed to study with him, he felt relieved - at least she didn't think it was weird. He cleared his stuff to one side of the table as she went back to pick up her books and bag.
When she sat down and opened up her book, she remarked that it wasn't complicated, there were just a lot of "fidgety details" as she put it. Bartholomew nodded.
"Photosynthesis seems to be that way," He remarked. "I understand the process, but I'm having a harder time with all the formulas. Do you understand all that?" He pointed to the page, which had the formula for photosynthesis as well as colorful diagrams that illustrated what happened in the plant cell.
Summary: [/i] Bart is relieved she doesn't think he's weird for offering to study, and clears his stuff to one side. They open their botany books and start work on the questions. Bart explains he doesn't like the formulas and such. Comments:[/i] Fine with me. :] [/blockquote]

Flora leaned over as far as she could to see where he was pointing.
"Yeah, I think I do," she said. She jabbed a finger at the first equation on the page. "See, that's the basic equation. Carbon dioxide plus water plus light turns into sugar plus oxygen plus water. The other equation--" she moved her finger to indicate her new focus "--is the same thing just simplified. 'Cause water was both a product and a reactant, you can just pretend it never happened. Sorta like in math when you cancel out stuff." Not that Flora was the sort of person who was comfortable speaking about math. For all she knew, those few words alone had contained three glaring errors about arithmetic. "The second one looks nicer, but it's not really as accurate. So I guess that means you're stuck having to know both..." That was annoying.
"And then I think that's all we need to know... Is there anything else? Were there any questions in the book relating to the formulas?"
Shifting her posture so that she was no longer invading Bart's personal bubble, she looked back at her own textbook and flipped through the pages to find the questions. She began running her eyes quickly over them.
