Kenneth, first and foremost, feels he has an image to protect, an image he's cultivated since elementary school. He is a badass. Ever since he was a kid, Kenneth had an air of untouchable coolness to him. At first, this wasn't intentional - the other children at Pallet Elementary thought he was cool because he didn't talk much, but Kenneth didn't talk much because he's not a great conversationalist and was terrified to talk to anyone. However, as the years have passed, Kenneth has grown into his role as the impossibly cool guy on the outskirts of the so-called popular people. As in his childhood, Kenneth's disdain for talking aids him in seeming very cool. He's a man of few words, and he generally tries to make each word he says count. Kenneth is blunt - either you have a point or you don't. When he's not talking - which is most of the time - Kenneth will usually chew on the end of an unlit cigarette, or, if he's on school grounds, toothpicks. It gives him something to do when he's busy not talking. (Off school grounds, he does smoke. He knows it's a terrible habit but he can't shake it and doesn't particularly care to try stopping.)
It's not that Kenneth is too dumb to say anything, though. Kenneth, despite being a few years behind in school, is actually fairly clever. He's not a genius, by any stretch of the imagination, but has a lot of practical thinking skills he gained from being a rabble-rousing loner most of his life. He can solve logic problems as quickly as you can supply them, and is an analytically-minded person. He takes problems, thinks them through for a few hours, then wordlessly turns in solutions. His grades are decent enough. (Most people are shocked by this, figuring that anyone who gets themselves into ju-v must be an idiot.) If anything, Kenneth can be summarized as 'street-smart' or 'life-smart', and has a way of knowing just how much to tease someone or when to avoid certain people just by looking in their eyes.
Speaking of teasing, when Kenneth does talk, chances are he's going to be ribbing someone about something. Kenneth teases others constantly, but it's mostly a sign of acceptance. He doesn't tease people he doesn't know, and he especially doesn't tease people he hates. Put simply, if Kenneth is giving you a hard time about your massive forehead or your geeky clothes, it's because he likes you at least a little bit. It might be his own way of making you stronger, even. With people he hates, his teasing - and speech in general - shuts off, and he simply glares at them. Thankfully, there are very few ways to get Kenneth to completely hate you. Being a somewhat reformed juvenile delinquent, he knows that most people have some good in them, and while he won't be wasting his time trying to bring that good out of someone, he will acknowledge it. Kenneth isn't one to judge others because of this.
Earning Kenneth's loyalty isn't easy. He's very much a loner, and prefers keeping company with himself than with others. However, should you manage to endear yourself to him, he will be unwavering in his loyalty. He won't start hanging out with you everywhere, but he will drop everything to help if it's necessary. He's a 'watch from the shadows' kind of guy, mostly because he knows no other way to befriend someone.
Kenneth isn't easy to anger. Thank God, because with his muscular body and snappy reflexes, he'd get close to killing anyone who pissed him off enough. However, the one surefire way to anger Kenneth is to threaten his family or close friends with violence or harm. Kenneth got himself in juvenile hall for attacking a neighbor based on this; he doesn't take kindly to anyone trying to use force against his closest allies. He is very much like his father and uncle in that respect. Kenneth views this as encroaching into his life and his territory, and he'll do anything to protect his livelihood.
Being a loner with long hair and a pretty face, Kenneth does have his share of ladies interested in him. Being a bad boy never goes out of style, apparently. Kenneth could not be more disinterested in dating. From what he's seen, dating is either a pathway straight to marriage, which he's not interested in right now, or a senseless, torturous exercise in seeing who in a pairing can be more paranoid. Romance is clearly not his thing. He can respect other people's relationships, but he can't imagine himself in anything resembling one. He doesn't even know what his sexual orientation is, he's so flippant about love. And he doesn't care.
Kenneth is a bit obsessed with his image as Pallet High's resident cool bad boy, though, more because of the social perks it offers. Since everyone knows he went to juvenile hall for a fairly intensive beating, few people are willing to get into his personal space, which is always nice. He's not held to the same social standards as others - whereas avoiding human contact would destroy a normal high schooler's social life, he's known for avoiding human contact. He does his best to play up this image, even if he avoids getting into fights and is rather mild-mannered in most cases. He just likes spending time alone.
Kenneth is a pretty calm individual, and isn't very emotional. Some would call him 'icy', though he hardly ever crosses the line into cool detachment. His level-headed nature doesn't make him any cooler, but it's pretty damn useful in stressful situations, which Kenneth finds himself in a lot, strangely.

appearance
Kenneth is built quite oddly for a juvenile delinquent. Or a student in general. He looks a bit older than most students at Pallet High School, partly because he's eighteen years old and partly because his eyes have a dark menace to them, an adult menace. His green-brown eyes also appear slightly sunken in, and sometimes Kenneth pulls off the uncanny illusion that he's not really listening to you talk while staring right at you. When he's yelling at you, the effect is downright creepy. The rest of his face is fairly normal - he has an oval-shaped face, framed by his long brown hair fairly well. When he smiles, it threatens to split apart his face; when he scowls, you can barely see his already thin lips. He's prone to getting acne, still, which bothers him immensely. It's hard to look dangerous with a zit on your forehead.
Kenneth is ridiculously in shape. He did spend his time in juvenile hall doing little else but lift weights, since his main priority was avoiding getting shanked. His arms in particular are insanely muscular, and, were he at all interested in sports, he could easily excel in something like baseball or lacrosse, which requires a lot of upper body strength. He can run fast, jump high, everything that comes with being athletically gifted and in the prime of youth. He doesn't take advantage of it, instead preferring to keep on lifting weights. He does tend to hide his arms, to avoid drawing attention to them. The best advantage to have in a fight, after all, is the element of surprise. However, his chest isn't that well-defined, despite Kenneth's best efforts to change that.
Kenneth is also tall. Very tall. Six foot four, to be exact. He finally stopped growing sometime in ju-v last year. He's easy to spot in a crowd. He has a hard time crawling under things when necessary, despite being pretty trim and fit, because of his height. He's figuring out ways to remedy this.
Kenneth has an image to uphold, one that demands he be seen as a cool, smooth badass operator. Of course he would dress as such. He usually pulls a beanie over his long, stringy brown hair, pulls a short-sleeved button-down over a wifebeater tank top, and wears dark-colored, banged-up jeans with combat boots to complete the look. Besides occasionally wearing a white tank top or white pullover, Kenneth dresses exclusively in dark colors. Again, he thinks it makes him look more badass. Anything he wears will have a multitude of pockets, though, since Kenneth carries around a lot of things, like cigarette cartons, bobby pins, his old Nokia cell phone, his beat up iPod, a black fraying wallet, a wallet chain far too heavy to be used as a wallet chain... Kenneth carries around a lot of things.

history
hometown - Pallet, Colorado
Kenneth Hauer Terwood was the child of two fairly well-known Pallet residents: Megan Bayless, a young divorce lawyer who was known for her benevolent nature; and Tyler Terwood, one of two Terwood brothers and a Olympic-caliber track runner. The Terwood family was an institution in Pallet, and the family had lived there pretty much since the town's founding. Megan, needless to say, was familiar with not just Tyler, but his brother, champion fencer Grover Terwood, and his extended family, very few of whom were still alive. Megan and Tyler were married within months of meeting - his strong devotion and dedication appealed to her, and her gentle, nurturing persona appealed to him. After a year of marriage, Kenneth was born, continuing the long line of men born to the Terwood family.
Kenneth was a fairly average baby, but there was a lot of expectations placed upon him. Tyler Terwood, in his youth, was part of the gold-medal-winning Olympic 400-meter dash team, in addition to competing in many other track events. Grover, who spent a lot of time watching Kenneth in his infancy while Megan and Tyler were working, was a great fencer until a damaged rotator cuff ended his career shortly before Megan and Tyler's marriage. The great majority of the Terwoods were athletic, smart, and charming. The Bayless family was even more smart and charming; not one of the Baylesses had anything less than a bachelor's degree. Kenneth subverted expectations immediately by not walking until he was about one, and, though he could talk by six months of age, he didn't talk often. He only spoke to indicate someone coming through the door, his own hunger, and a dirty diaper. Tyler, Grover, and Megan didn't quite know what to do with him; others in the Terwood family suggested day-care, or interacting more with other children.
The family finally caved and enrolled Kenneth in day-care when he was two. Day-care turned out to be a disaster, since Kenneth much preferred to be by himself, to the point where other kids intruding in his personal space bubble sent him running off in fear. The adults at the care center noted that he was smart, but seemed unnaturally afraid of talking to other children. He seemed fine around adults, after all. None of this news could've come at a more stressful time for the Terwoods; Megan had recently discovered she was newly pregnant, with a baby girl.
When Kenneth turned three, his baby sister, Rita Terwood, was born. Finally, some of that fear began to shed as Kenneth interacted with his baby sister. Kenneth greatly treasured Rita, playing with her, helping Tyler and Grover change her diapers, and even made an effort to prepare food for her. Kenneth and Rita grew up to be near inseparable, and, even though Kenneth still didn't interact well with students upon entering kindergarten at age four, he vastly improved in relating to others because of one-year-old Rita.
In elementary school, a strange thing happened. Kenneth explained it as strange to his parents, anyway, but they understood immediately what was happening. Kenneth noted that he rarely spoke to anyone outside of class, kept to himself, and wasn't interested in being popular. Yet, somehow, he'd become extremely popular with his classmates. It bothered him extensively. It wasn't until junior high that Kenneth fully understood his parents' response to his worries: "they love your freedom." And Kenneth really did relish his freedom. His parents tried to get him into a sport, often, and failed with pretty much all of them, but socially, he wasn't bound by others' judgments since he avoided others.
Finally entering high school at age thirteen, Kenneth hit puberty - hard. He shot up in height, suddenly developed some muscles, and oh God did girls suddenly like loners or something? Most of his freshman year was spent avoiding people and realizing that he vastly overestimated this popularity thing. He enjoyed being at home, though, because Rita had just entered middle school, and was extremely excited about it. However, as the year wore on, an eighth-grader began to pick on her. It wasn't bad at first, but then Rita would come home in tears by winter break. Kenneth was at his wits' end - he loved Rita and hated seeing her hurt, but didn't know what to do.
When the bully beat up Rita, Kenneth snapped, skipping school the next day to exact some sort of revenge. Tyler told Kenneth that if he protected Rita, he would stand beside Kenneth's decisions. Kenneth knew enough about the bully to recognize him, and accosted him after the middle school let out. Kenneth planned on only scaring some sense into him with words; however, the bully showed such little remorse for Rita that Kenneth almost snapped. When the bully said he'd beat her up again, Kenneth did snap.
His snapping got him arrested, bluntly stated. You can't beat up kids, no matter how justified it is. Tyler, true to his word, stood behind Kenneth, as did Grover; the Terwood family name was dragged through the mud in the ensuing Pallet media frenzy. Most of Kenneth's fourteenth year was spent in court, where he was eventually sentenced to juvenile hall for two years. Kenneth didn't do much to argue it. He pretty obviously beat up that kid. He had no defense, and didn't even try to defend himself.
Juvenile hall was in Denver, so for two years, from age fifteen to seventeen, Kenneth made the facility his home. He survived there the same way he survived at home - avoiding people. Avoiding people pretty much guaranteed that he wouldn't be attacked in the shower. Kenneth also discovered that, despite his newfound notoriety at home for beating up a twelve year old, the kids in the facility, most of the time, had done much, much worse things. Kenneth used his two years reading and bulking up in the facility's weight room. Occasionally, he was also sent to a psychologist, who probably loathed him because he didn't speak. Kenneth didn't have anything to talk about. All told, juvenile hall was a pretty mild experience for Kenneth, since he made it a pretty mild experience, and, when his sentence ended, didn't feel worse for the wear.
Going back to Pallet was eye-opening, however. The town hated him, and his family, and his sister worst of all, his poor sister! The locals weren't kind to Kenneth upon his return. After musing on it for a few days, Kenneth devised a solution. Most of the media was calling him a bad boy and out-of-control - why not give them what they want? Kenneth had already grown out his hair in ju-v for no particular reason, and he didn't want to go back to school and get bothered every day about this mess. He told Rita, recently a freshman at Pallet High, that he was going to do exactly what everyone in the school expected him to do, namely, be a total loner badass. That way, people would leave him alone, right? Rita thought he was nuts and told him it would never work.
But it did, somehow. Kenneth's act - basically his personality with some more glaring attached - worked splendidly, and after a year, not only was Kenneth one of the most popular kids in school again (you couldn't win them all), he was left mercifully alone, save for the company of a few select friends and his dear sister Rita. Yes, no one in town respects the Terwood name because of him, but Tyler, Megan, and Grover are still behind him (even though he needs to pick a damn sport), which is all that matters. So he begins his junior year, eighteen and insane.

- basic information: I wanted to make Kenneth's name reflect Treecko's, so not only does his last name begin with T, 'wood', pertaining to trees, is in there as well. Hauer is a derivative of the region where Treecko is found, Hoenn. Kenneth is just a name that I found rolled with the other two names well. (Also, Kenneth McCormick? Total badass. Kenneth Terwood? Trying to be a badass.) Most Treecko are male, according to Bulbapedia, including the Treecko highlighted in the Pokemon Hoenn anime, which I was basing Kenneth after somewhat. I chose Kinesiology as a major for Kenneth because I view Treecko as a very physical Pokemon. A lot of his attacks Treecko can learn are very physical, like Slam and Strength.
- personality: Kenneth's personality is somewhat based on my own impressions of the Treecko in the Hoenn anime: a badass who, though rough around the edges, is a decent enough person. Most of the traits I chose for his personality come directly from Ash's Treecko in the anime: he's not easily angered, fights for those he's loyal too, and teases pretty much everyone who crosses his path. Bulbapedia also notes that Treecko are territorial, which I worked into both Kenneth's personality (with his one thing that makes him go berserk) and his history. Also, Kenneth's habit of dangling unlit cigarettes and toothpicks from his mouth comes directly from the Hoenn anime - replace cigarettes and toothpicks with twigs.
- appearance: Basically, took Kenneth's personality facets and translated them into something a person would wear. His body type was completely influenced by his PB, who appears a bit scrawny until he's in a short-sleeved shirt. Then it's like, "ARMS WHERE DID THOSE COME FROM."
- history: One of the main traits I tried to bring across with the Terwood family is a trait that Treecko displayed in the Hoenn anime: fierce loyalty. His father, the stand-in for Sceptile, and his uncle, the Grovyle stand-in, are just as loyal to their family and network as Kenneth is to his own friends. This loyalty is a major theme in their story. Kenneth's mom represents a Meganium, as Ash's evolved Grovyle had an affection for it in the episode 'Odd Pokemon Out', and Bulbapedia states that Meganium as a species are benevolent and peace-makers. A divorce lawyer seemed like a career that a peace-maker may excel in. Sceptile are known for their speed (Bulbapedia), so TYLer Terwood became a track runner. His brother GROVer Terwood became a fencer because Bulbapedia notes that Grovyle can use the rarely-used Leaf Blade attack. Blades became fencing, for some reason. Rita is supposed to be based on a Chikorita.

Kenneth knew he shouldn't be smoking on school grounds. He'd only been reminded, oh, five hundred times. Quick as those in Pallet had been to shuttle him off to Denver Correctional Facility, they were suddenly loathe to punish him further. Besides, he was in the back field, the one that used to be where the lacrosse team practiced. Since there was no longer a lacrosse team, no one ever wandered back into the lush green grass. Kenneth, eternally seeking new places to loiter where no one would bother him, claimed the back field as his personal hideout a few weeks prior, and had already stamped out a little dirt patch to put out his cigarettes towards the leftmost corner. Smoke languidly hovering over his head, Kenneth wondered how Rita's math class was going. Probably not well, since it was math, but Rita got through classes. Kenneth was supposed to be in biology, but as far as he was concerned, if it wasn't related to his kinesiology, he didn't care.
That was the other thing. Tyler and Grover still wanted him to find some sort of sport to excel in. Apparently, weight lifting wasn't a sport worth pursuing, you stupid stick of a boy, how about something else? Kenneth wasn't much for organized sports, he thought, taking a drag of his cigarette. His green-brown eyes trailed around, making sure no one was coming towards him. Yes, this was a good ten minutes out of anyone's way, but Kenneth could never be sure. He could appreciate what his dad and uncle did. He didn't get why his mom was on him so much about doing something - Megan knew he was smart, and knew that he could eke out a living as a personal trainer or something. Maybe the problem was that Kenneth had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. In a perfect world, he'd just sit around with his family all day, helping them out with their life dreams. But he was a Terwood, so he must Do Something. Kenneth wasn't lazy, but... he wasn't one for sports.
Not like any of the teams would want him. Yes, he was feared and loved and weirdly adored at Pallet High. It didn't mean they wanted a guy who beat up kids on their team. It was one time, and it was definitely goaded out of him, but reputations die hard. Hearing the crunch of footsteps in grass, Kenneth quickly stamped out his cigarette, turning around to see - oh great. The old lacrosse coach. And he didn't look pleased about the small tuft of dirt next to Kenneth's steeled-toe boots.
Apparently practice had started up again. Well, fuck his life and welcome to detention.
