personality
The first thing to come to mind when considering Jason Minas is words like 'bashful' and 'meek'. Uninclined to general malevolence, he will patiently work his way through each day and do his best not to stir up trouble or bother others. It's not that he's intensely people-shy or introverted; only child and independent thinker that he is, he doesn't mind being alone - though he secretly craves the attention and affection of others.
He is, on the other hand, quite sensitive and responsive to the behaviour and cues of any person he interacts with. Awkward situations will prompt blushing and mental shutdowns, and stressful situations will trigger defiance and unstable fight-or-flight mechanisms. The boy is highly judgemental of others; he will, unfortunately, judge a book by its cover and immediately treat someone in a particular way based on his first impression of them and how they act towards him and others. This can change, but he takes a bit of convincing.
Friends or close acquaintances will receive good cheer, gratitude, an open heart, and the teasing and light wit Jason rarely lets on. Acquaintances or strangers will be treated with polite neutrality, and enemies or those he simply dislikes will experience his indifference peppered with demanding hints, subtle rude comments and gestures, or most fearsome of all, the barbed end of his tongue. Jason may prefer to remain docile, but he doesn't take kindly to any sort of insult or slight on himself or those he cares about.
Along with being judgemental, Jason can get quite selfish and jealous - this encompasses everything from his friends to someone he has a crush on, to getting the top grades in the class. In light of this, he will deeply appreciate something for what it's worth, especially the goodwill of others. Taking anything for granted is a great folly - this is one of the principles he lives by.
Last of all - Jason can be studious and dedicated, too, and he adheres to rules, guidelines and deadlines. But sometimes he loses his head in the clouds. Daydreams are custom, especially when he's outside with nature. He has a great fondness for the world around him, but he’s more of an admirer than someone who jumps right in and gets his hands dirty. Not only does he appreciate nature but also the magic of life, love and goodness; he is a hopeless romantic at times, and he’s always looking out for the right guy. Yes, he’s homosexual, and while he isn’t your stereotypical gay kid, he isn’t your stereotypical straight kid, either. Quirks in his conduct and mannerisms do hint at it, as do his attention to detail, his good eye for aesthetics, and his sometimes-sentimental nature and touchy-feely vibes.

appearance
Jason is a willowy, non-intimidating individual standing at 5’2”. He’s already finished all his growing, so his face and body are well-proportioned, but he still looks younger than he is, and can be mistaken as being a year or two younger than he actually is. Some wonder if he’s even hit puberty yet, as he has barely a hint of acne or impending facial hair. His fair complexion is clear and easily prone to colouration – whether from a blush or sunburn – and his facial features are still quite young and boyish: heart-shaped face, delicate bone structure, a button nose… You’d wanna pinch his dimpled cheeks just to see him blush.
Jason takes good care of his hair; he keeps the straight, soft, light brown locks well-managed, at a length that isn’t to short but isn’t so long that it gets into his eyes or grows over the back of his neck. As for his eyes, they are a shade of clear, grassy green, his most valuable asset. His vision, however, is unbalanced; there is nothing visibly wrong with it, but his left eye is distinctly long-sighted (form of amblyopia), so he can be seen wearing narrow, thin-framed glasses when reading and writing (though he avoids wearing them where possible).
His dress sense is neat and modest with a hint of class. His wardrobe is wide and varied, but he’s picky about what he won’t wear (and that includes bright colours, unusual designs, shoes with laces, baggy jeans, shirts without collars, and various others). His favourite colours to wear are natural ones: green, blue, brown, grey, and white, all in gentle and pastel tones.

history
hometown - London, England
Jason was the only child of Charon and June Minas, British born and bred. They devoted everything to him, focusing their lives and their livelihoods on raising a good son. It was they who taught him his dedicated sense of manners, to be a strong-minded free thinker, to work hard for what he wanted, and yet in a way, he was spoiled and coddled and overwhelmed by their constant advice and attention, sheltered and held close lest the big bad world corrupt the goodness they had cultivated.
His mother wanted him to do well at school, not to gather friends. It was from her which he inherited his critical nature, and it was her attitude which unknowingly encouraged his negative traits. From a very young age, the boy was jealous of others for anything they had which he did not, and grew irritated with anyone who would not treat him with anything less than the utmost respect and praise he thought he deserved.
His parents put him in good schools and transferred him every few years, but even esteemed institutions left much to be coveted. Jason might have had a decent amount of intelligence, but good grades and a spotless record weren’t everything. He might be admired for them, but there were other things in life he was missing out on: the world outside, the company of others, to taste the sweet nectar of dreams and love… Somewhere along the way he realised that life isn’t all about school and work. His father spent much of his time as an environmental researcher, which was where young Jason had picked up on the interests of ecology, biology, and all things alive and thriving.
At the tender age of thirteen, Jason thought he had found true love; a premature realization, an unfortunate blunder. His interest in other boys and lack of masculinity had been a defining feature from a young age; he’s proud of who he is but keeps mostly quiet about it. A boy his own age reached out to him, discovered the truth and briefly toyed with him before practically throwing him away, like a shiny toy quickly dulled. The experience left him deeply hurt and destroyed many of his idyllic preconceptions about romance, but it had been inevitable. Most teenagers experience some sort of heartbreak, disposal, rejection or unrequited attraction at some point, and his case was no different – only that it was slightly more difficult for someone like him to accurately locate other males who had the same preferences. In this matter, he still dreams about finding the right person for him, but in reality, he’s more of a pessimist about it.
His parents did not know the cause for his subsequent bout of depression and his drop in academic performance, and while he coasted along just fine for another year or two, when an opportunity arose – his father had managed to find a research opportunity abroad – he took his son with him, hoping that the sea change would do him some good. Pallet High School seemed just right for Jason, with its diversity in attendees and specialty subjects, and hopefully it would open his mind, help him find some friends, and help him find his niche. He's only been there for a small handful of months now, so he's still adjusting to the environment and his classmates, but his progress is steady.

connect the dots
First of all, the name ‘Shaymin’ itself is present in Jason’s full name, uninterrupted. However, his middle name is rarely seen except on formal documents. Even so, his first name is vaguely reminiscent of the name Shaymin itself; both have two syllables, and both have the same phonetic vowels.
Shaymin is one of the smallest Pokemon in existence (ref: Bulbapedia). While Jason is not a dwarf, nor is he particularly tall. At his height, he is shorter than most of his male classmates. He looks underwhelming, harmless and innocent, just like Shaymin, and with his fair skin, soft hair, round green eyes and boyish looks, is similarly endearing (depending on your tastes, of course – some look at him and don’t think much of him, as he’s not all that impressive, either). But beware; just like the Pokemon he represents, this pint-sized pupil packs a punch.
Rather like Shaymin itself, which has two forms, so does his attitude have distinct subsections: the one that is withdrawn, coy, wary and defensive (i.e. Land Forme) and the other that is free-spirited, bold and courageous (i.e. Sky Forme). This is based largely on observation of Shaymin’s personality in the movie Giratina and the Sky Warrior. Shaymin can sense the gratitude in others, and will treat them rudely if they are ungrateful, but be gracious to those who are. Jason operates similarly; he may not be a gratitude-detector, but he is quick to judge others based on what he sees, hears and senses, and will be as demanding or curt as necessary if someone does something he doesn’t like. The gratitude he senses in others is highly important, and he himself will project gratitude whenever he really means it. And if he’s encouraged to leave his metaphoric shell – if he’s with someone he likes or loves, or in a situation that makes him happy or comfortable (receiving affection and praise is an example) – he loosens up and is much more convivial and confident.
However, all the Shaymin depicted in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky are generally sweet and helpful, with nothing at all distinguishing them as rude, bossy or arrogant - this is why I've downplayed the extremes in Jason's negative nature, because no doubt the Shaymin in the Pokemon movie does not represent all Shaymin. Thus, Jason is mostly passive, neutral and kind at a passing glance, and will offer help without complaint
Shaymin is a symbol of purity, cleanliness and bountiful nature, evidenced most clearly by its move Seed Flare, which clears away all pollution. Jason may not be super-obsessive about hygiene, but he is a very neat and attentive person when it comes to keeping things orderly and clean. His dorm room is kept tidy, and he sometimes takes the time to go outside and pick up any trash that’s dirtying the campus. This also explains his choice for Ecology as his major.
As for his purity of mind… hah, as if any teenager could be really and truly naïve. No, Jason himself will exhibit innocent and clueless traits at times, but he’s anything but. The fact does remain, nonetheless, that he’s been rather scarce in the romance department and is not noticeably sexual or crude. Just like Shaymin, he always retains some of that sense of childlike virtue.

The butterflies in his stomach weren't butterflies; they were great leaping lizards, and instead of going away, they'd settled down since Friday afternoon, the day he had arrived at Pallet High School. It was now Monday morning - his time was up. No more huddling away in his dorm rooms, no more obsessive arranging and rearranging of his belongings, and no more nervous worrying. He had flitted around the grounds a couple of times, getting a feel for the place, and was able to appreciate how pretty it all was, modern facilities against a natural setting that he was sure he could easily get lost in.
Much as he wouldn't admit it at first, it already felt like home. He had moved schools and living locations a couple of times already, but never so drastically as this - never beyond the bounds of England. He did love his home country and was already feeling the bittersweet tug of nostalgia, but he put faith in his parents' decision to send him here. In the warmer months, he'd hopefully see more sunshine and get more fresh air. People's attitudes here in America were subtly but noticeably different to those of the British. Jason wasn't sure if he liked it yet. It did vary from person to person, after all, and he'd barely interacted with anyone, staying out of sight for the time being. In the classroom, he was in his element, but outside of it was a different story altogether. Well, he'd just have to wait and see.
He was an early riser but not necessarily a morning person. He wasn't sure if he should be looking forward to today or terrified by the prospect of it, but he forced himself to get ready, his routine the same as it had been back at home whenever he would get ready for school, paying the closest attention to looking impeccable, particularly in dress. The white shirt and green vest looked okay, and he had a tie on, but it looked like he was going overboard, so he took it off in a huff, reminding himself that this was not one of the strict, high-reputation institutions he'd last attended. If the weather was colder, he would have picked out a scarf, but that was not the case. As his mother had convinced him long ago, he would always be a special flower and nothing he did to change his appearance or bearing would fail to distinguish him from the rest, but even so, he always felt the inexplicable urge to... blend in, hide away, like a sapling in a forest.
Jason recalled the phonecall he'd received from her yesterday, the seventh in three days, and for the seventh time, he'd tried to convince her that everything was fine, he had settled in well, nothing had gotten lost or gone awry. How many times would he have to vehemently pronounce 'I can take care of myself!' before she believed him? Ahh, never, probably. This was the furthest he'd ever been from her, but he was lucky that his dad was still down in Denver. Just an hour away. No worries, right?
The petite boy made sure to step into his first class not too early but not too late, filing in behind other students whose appearances he didn't have the heart to note. Gaze always averted earthwards, slim glasses slipping down his short nose, only donned in the hope that they might somehow conceal his whole face, if not dim his large, terrified green eyes. Why terrified, you ask? He'd just noticed all the good seats had been taken, and he had no choice but to duck down timidly and take a seat in one of the middle aisles. Damn it, if only he'd gotten here a little earlier...
It would take some time before poor little Jason realised that no, his fellow students were not going to take a bite out of him. Probably. He had no idea who they were or why they had come to Pallet, but there was surely a kindred spirit out there... surely.
